Sunforce 39626 160-Watt High-Efficiency Polycrystalline Solar Power Kit Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this kit for installation on the roof of my motorhome. Delivery was delayed, and then rescheduled a couple of times, so delivery was problematic; but everything arrived in good condition. In short, I've been ecstatic about the PV panels, and kinda "meh" about everything else.
So, let's talk about the good: The panels are fantastic. Well-made, long warranty, and they consistently produce more than the advertised power when in direct sunlight (12 amps is not unheard of, according to the charge controller display; though that's only for a few minutes each day...it mostly hovers between 6 and 10 during the peak sun hours of the day). I won't hesitate to buy more Sharp solar panels when it comes time to expand my array.
The rest of the kit, however, leaves something to be desired.
The worst aspect of the kit is the lack of documentation. The solar panels have documentation, but it covers mounting on permanent structures, and with brackets wholly unlike the ones provided in the kit. The wiring examples in the solar panel documentation also has no relation to how this kit would be wired up on a motorhome or boat. The charge controller also has a little booklet, but there's nothing about mounting the panels or wiring them up on a motorhome or boat. So, you're kinda on your own when it comes to bolting them down and wiring them up; it's not rocket science, but it's not obvious either. I sent an email to Sunforce asking a couple of questions I had about the installation, and got no reply.
The Sunforce inverter is cheaply made. While it works, it is noisy and gets quite warm. The fan has also started making yucky noises in the 4 months I've used it. I bought a 1000W Wagan inverter recently, and it is quieter and cooler. Even before the fan started making noise, the inverter itself had a high pitched hum.
The provided DC meter is less than worthless. I couldn't see the indicator lights when the sun was bright enough to check the solar panels. Luckily, I have a nice DMM, so I just tossed the provided DC meter. There are DMMs for less than ten bucks on Amazon that I'm sure are better than this volt meter.
The cable provided is lighter gauge than the documentation suggests you use for runs of this length, and it only covers the run from the panels to the controller; and not the run from the controller to the battery bank. So, you're on your own there.
The mounting brackets had a couple of unthreaded nuts, which was inconvenient and a time-waster. So QC during the packaging process is kinda lax.
The charge controller is the only Sunforce-branded component in this kit that I actually like. It's small, it's cheap, and it does the job reliably and with reasonable indicator lights and display. It doesn't run hot, doesn't make noise, and looks good stuck in the wall of my motorhome. I have no complaints about it.
So, to sum up: Great solar panels, decent charge controller, but this kit is over-priced at the full-price. I paid about $850, which was about the same price as the two panels by themselves at the time, so a pretty good deal. These days, with the price being back up $1000, you'd be much better off buying the panels independently, and using the remaining $200 to buy a high quality charge controller (the Sunforce one works fine; you can get it for about 30 bucks, I think), good heavy gauge stranded copper wire, a good inverter, and higher quality brackets (hopefully with documentation that covers using those brackets). If you don't have a DMM, pick one up. You'll spend about the same amount, and end up with a much better installation when you're finished...and with nice thick wire, you can add more panels later without having to run more wire, which is not something I can say for my installation.

I bought a deep-cycle marine battery but am getting too old to lug it in and out of the canoe for charging. So I got this little panel and, so far, have not run out of juice. And it's cheap enough so if someone steals it it's no big tragedy. I run a laptop, TV, fluorescent light and charge my cell phone. I even have a 12v car-vac to clean the sand out of the tent.
Of course, I'm not there 95% of the time so 5 watts is probably adequate. And I don't have to worry about overcharging. I screwed it to a big log in pretty open sun. So far, it has survived, even some small hail.
BTW, I use the power cord from an old vacuum cleaner and a 4-way 12v splitter to distribute power from the battery.

Fortunately, my husband knew that when the fan is installed the blades need to move freely without power and that wasn't happening. If you run it while the blades are locked up you can burn out the motor.
He had to take the unit apart and found a clip improperly installed in the motor. He was able to repair it and reassemble the fan and now it works fine. It is very quiet during operation.

(More customer reviews)I am very mixed about this product, so I'll give you the good, the bad, and the overview.
First, the overview: This product is easy to install. I am a contractor so I am used to installing things, but my 9 year old nephew would have no trouble installing this product either. Though not well documented, and described inacurately, this is a good low light source for cabinets with a lip that will hide the units at a low price.
Next, the good: This product does not give off as much light as some others I have seen, but it does give off more than some older models I have used and with 6 heads under $50 this product is a great choice for accent or secondary lighting to brighten up spaces under counters. If you are looking for this price range, you could do a lot worse.
Now the bad: I opened the package and thought it odd that I had to install the plugs on the ends of the cords myself. They supplied self crimping plugs, so no tools were needed, but be careful to get the polarity right! Next, the cord system disappointed me. Basically it is 6 units, which each have a 4' cord, that then connect to two 4' extension cords, which in turn connect back to a power strip with three outlets, and that strip has a touch sensor with three light levels. I assume, though I haven't tested this, that I will be able to add holiday lights or other small lights to this strip and use one switch for all of these things. The whole set-up seems cheap. If I had more time, I could have added some wire (crimped on), and a connector box of my own, and made it a bit more professional for another $15 worth of materials, but I was in a hurry so I used their parts and added some cable ties and anchors to keep all the excess wire bundled up neatly out of sight. The lights are a bit dim, but not the dimest that I've seen. The mounting is only by screws, I would have included double sided tape. The description is very vague and doesn't give enough information to buy off of. The ascution rings fit loosely and move when touched. The screws provided are very cheap and the holes so small that I can't get much better. They do not provide any mounting method except to screw to wood (no way to attach to metal, concrete, or to the bars of typical closet shelving as I was thinking I might get a second kit for). All-in-all, they could have put in a few extra dollars and made these ten times better, but they didn't...
Now for the inaccuracies: The description says that the units are cool to the touch, which is not true (they are actually quite hot on the sides and bottom, but this isn't a problem for me because I don't reach up under these counters for anything). It also calls them "chrome," which turned out to be very cheap plastic painted gray.
So, next time I'll spend the money on an LED system because of energy efficiency and also light color, but since this is being installed permanently in my office at work (which I don't own), I think the cost savings justified the cheap quality.
I rated this product a 3 because it gets a 1 for quality, a 0 for accurate description, but a 5 for price.

(More customer reviews)First of all the Satco box itself was damaged, and still they sent it - I could tell it had been damaged in the factory because the shipping info was on top of the damaged area and scotch taped over.
The image shown on the Amazon site is very deceiving. In actuality while the Par 30 lamp is held in place by a ring - the rest of the light bulb is exposed except where it enters the socket. But no where do you see that. Once you screw the bulb in place to the gimbal ring, the bulb has a tendency to fall out of the ring whenever you try to adjust the angle. Very dangerous. On top of that, the whole structure of the track light is flimsy. Do not buy this track light. I ordered two and returned them immediately. No wonder the box was damaged - the Satco track lights probably have been returned many times already. This is the worst thing I have ever ordered from Amazon.

Hydrofarm Seedling Heat Mat Review

(More customer reviews)We are home gardeners and have tried many ways to provide bottom-heat for vegetable seed germination -- atop my always-on docked laptop was the most effective but the space was tiny. We bought a 20" x 20" heat mat and now have the right tool for the job. We set it up on a card table and found that it was not providing sufficient heat to the soil in the trays above. After an overnight on the mat, the soil surface was less than 10 degrees above ambient temperature. The room where the seeds are was 60 degrees overnight, and the soil surface in the trays was 68 degrees -- certainly not good enough for eggplant germination. I used an infrared thermometer (Raytek Minitemp MT6 here on Amazon) to check all temps. The exposed mat surface (no tray on top) was 82 degrees. I felt the surface on the underside of the card able and it was definitely warm, indicating heat loss downward. I wanted all of the heat to go up into the soil, so I cut a piece of rigid-foam insulation just slightly larger than the heat mat (22" x 22") and put it under the mat. Within 15 minutes the exposed surface of the mat was at 97 degrees and when I moved a tray to measure the temp of the mat beneath a tray, it was at 115 degrees. 2 hours later, the soil surface temperature was at 85 degrees. I am now confident the soil will get enough heat for proper germination, and I will begin using the heat mat thermostat to regulate soil temps based on the particular seeds we're starting (search the Web for "vegetable seed germination temperatures" to find one of the many reference charts available). We can also regulate temperature by covering or uncovering the trays to change the rate of evaporative cooling. We are well aware that covered soil is more prone to damping off/seedling death, which we now control with a spray of strong-brewed chamomile tea.

(More customer reviews)We bought this Monte Carlo Centrifica to replace a builder installed fan in our kitchen which didn't match anything, was an eyesore and mainly collected dust. Since most of our appliances are stainless steel --- and since the blades are spring loaded and compact inward when the fan is off --- this was an excellent choice.
PROS:
This is a great looking fan that is entertaining to watch, folds compactly when turned off and gives a designer touch to our high ceiling kitchen. The fan is well built, quiet, smart-looking and very entertaining. The motor and bearings are top quality. The fan is completely silent and operates flawlessly. The Halogen downlight and frosted downlight dome put out very attractive lighting.
CONS:
The fan is very pricey --- especially when you consider that the blades are not stainless steel or aluminum, but instead are made of plywood which are painted silver. The instructions are not completely clear and the fan requires a 100w specialty halogen bulb that comes with the unit but must be very carefully handled since oil from your hands could make the bulb explode when turned on. If you are replacing an existing fan, your existing wall switches may have to be disconnected since this unit uses a remote powered by a specialty A23 12v alkaline battery not available at your local convenience store.
CONCLUSION:
If you don't mind the price, and are looking for something different, that will get lots of compliments, provide great entertainment, and looks good in a stainless kitchen, then this is your choice. Although we would prefer the blades were made of metal - no one can really tell that they aren't. One of the best features is that the blades automatically retract when the fan is turned off, thereby making the room look bigger.

We like the look, the cost and how it works (very quiet and stable, also flush mountable). you get the best bang of your money. A month ago, we bought another one from Amazon.com. In the product description it states using "standard-base light bulbs". After opening the package, we found that it uses candelabra based light bulbs. For this, we returned it to Amazon.com because we'd like to use more generic products for easy light bulb replacement.
After talking to several sales persons and electricians at local Home Depot stores, I found all new ceiling fans have changed light bulbs to either candelabra base or Intermediate base (or E-17 Intermediate) in recent years in order to bypass an energy saving requirement imposed on Standard Medium Base light bulbs. At this time, there is no specific energy-saving requirement on the candelabra or Intermediate base light bulbs. The downside of using none-standard type bulbs is that you are locked in to buy them from limited number of dealers. It can be hard to find replacement bulbs.

(More customer reviews)I had to replace my old Nutone vent fan. First I tried a Nutone 668RP which was supposed to fit right into the opening and save me some work. It didn't, I had to make the opening larger. Then the junction box was on the opposite side of the old fan so I had to put in another electrical box to extend the wires. Finally got it installed but when it was running it sounded like a helicopter taking off. The specs say 4 sones but it was more like 24 sones, and it didn't take out the moisture. I then ordered the Panasonic FV-08VSL1. After re-sizing the opening one more time, installation was fairly simple. At first the lights wouldn't work but I discovered I had missed one white wire hiding behind the others---there are a lot of wires!
You can barely hear this fan when it is running (1.3 sones) and it does an outstanding job of venting the humidity from the bathroom. This is the first time in 14 years we don't have fog on the bathroom mirror after a shower, and more importantly, there is no humidity left in the room so we don't have to leave the fan running for an extra 10 minutes to get rid of the rest of the humidity like we did with the Nutone. Also, the fan is ruggedly built with a heavy duty enclosure and blower. It looks like it will last forever. I highly recommend this unit!

(More customer reviews)This basic Weller 25 Watt Soldering Iron Kit does exactly what it should: it solders, and for a basic soldering iron, it does its job well. It's an essential tool for a beginner, basic hobbyist or for the toolkit of a seasoned pro to replace an older version (and yes, have owned a few over the years). It heats up to about the recommended temperature of 750 degrees F, and has a heat-resistant handle that has been a trademark of this tool for years.

It includes three nickel-plated tips: a familiar chisel point, a pencil point, and a flat screwdriver tip. It has a stainless steel barrel, an improvement of the much older models that Weller used to make. And yes, they do last for years.

Wish that I could say the same about the ColdHeat Cordless Soldering Tool, but I can't due to some serious flaws in that product. See my review on it for further details.
If the small Weller soldering iron seems too basic for your needs, take a serious look at the Weller WLC100 Soldering Station, an excellent 5-star product for the hobbyist and the do-it-yourselfer alike. Must admit that this is the next one on my shopping list.

(More customer reviews)I have a UV 25 LED strip light from the same manufacturer and I was pleased initially when I received it direct from the manufacturer. Since then, the light has become significantly dimmer (within 2 months) and I discontinued use for a few months. To my dismay, when I plugged it in again, there were 3 intermittent LEDs that would either be dead or barely on.
These strip lights use the same circuit board as mine and i would imagine are prone to this fault. Be sure you order this product with a guarantee from Acolyte (my guarantee lasted only 30 days, hopefully they have expanded customer service since then) because there is a risk that they may not work after a month of use. I also have a 50 LED version of this, and I can attest to its superior lighting abilities with rich color. I am sure that these are just as good, but with my personal experience with the 25-LED module is fair warning for all you potential buyers. The price is about right, but you may be able to snag a better deal from their eBay store.

I have read the other reviews about the fan making noise, so I was a bit skeptical about buying it, but I bought it anyways. Boy I am glad I did! This is a really good looking ceiling fan. Gives the room a classy, but not too flashy look. Every person who has come to the house after I installed this has complimented on it. As far as noise, I experienced none. Just make sure when you put the blades together with the arms, make certain that the screws are good and tight. I used a cordless DeWalt drill with the torque setting set low to #12 to assure a good tight fit. I actually was so impressed with the looks and operation of this fan that I immeadiately went back to amazon.com and bought another fan exactly like this one, for my kitchen. Same review - absolutely no problems, none whatsoever. Shipping was very fast with the free super saver shipping, I got it in about 3 days after ordering. Wal-Mart offers this same exact fan, but it is priced about $20 higher.
ONE THING I WILL STRESS: Absolutely DO NOT and I mean, DO NOT waste your time buying the cheap candelabra candle tip bulbs - It seems to me that it burns through a lot of them. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot (or even here at Amazon.com) and buy the CFL (Compact Flourescent Light Bulbs) Candelabra base bulbs. I've had the CFL bulbs in there for almost two months in the living room fan and they are yet to burn out. But I have the regular ones in the kitchen and have had all three burn out once already. So, pay the extra money and get the CFL bulbs. They will last longer and you'll save money in the long run.... 13 Watt CFL = 60 Watt Incandescent. Also keep in mind that CFL bulbs can be purchased in different color temperatures to give you the light effect you want. So pay attention to that. Hope this review helped you out.

(More customer reviews)I chose this unit after reviewing all the options for trying out hydroponic gardening, and now 30 days after receiving it and 29 days after starting seeds, I'm very pleased with the results. I've posted a picture so you can see how nicely everything is growing. Everything you need but a plant light and seeds is in the kit, and I started out with just 3 fluorescent bulbs and a southeast window, and salad garden seeds left over from last year's outdoor garden. The manufacturer makes commercial hydroponic systems, so I figured they would do a simple home system right, and they did. I'm thinking of buying a second one next winter, as this unit only takes up half the length of my plant light.
What's not to like? The air pump does not fit its recess well, and I had to tape it in and pad it to keep in place without buzzing. They don't tell you whether to set the pump on "high" or "low"; low, I figured, and it seems to work fine. The system is all plastic, and one of the pots already had a minor chip in it when I got it. Finally, the instructions are awfully sketchy (just a single sheet) for a beginner, though they were enough for me, an experienced outdoor gardener who had already researched the subject on the internet.

I learned a few tricks in the process
These are some general troubleshooting steps:
1.- Check the wiring first. Be sure wires has not been damaged. With ohm meter check for open circuit or short circuit.
2.-Disconnect the receiver and sender units. They both connect to the same terminals. Terminals 2 and 3 in my opener. Be sure to label the wires to be able to reconnect them later. Measure the voltage in the terminals. It should be around 6 volts DC. Terminal 2 negative. Terminal 3 positive. If there is no voltage the control card in the opener is defective. This kit will not help in that case.
3.- Reconnect the sender unit first. Its LED light should come on. If it does not, the sender is defective. Replace the sender.
4.- If the sender LED comes on, connect the receiver unit. The LED light comes on when it detects infrared light. Point the sender to the receiver. The receiver LED light should come on. If it does not try with a TV remote. TV remotes emit infrared light also. Point any TV remote to the receiver unit and press any button. The LED light in the receiver should light up. If it does not. The receiver is defective.
This kit includes a receiver unit, a sender unit and hardware to install.
