(More customer reviews)I've been using this starter kit for years now and love it. I am a long time X10 user and these are much more reliable. Programing was easy. I did purchase a programmer right from the start. Lots of features. If you like X10, you'll love these. They are what X10 should have been. I have had one 'noise' problem though. I have a 12v halogen track fixture who's electronic transformer started to generate so much noise that even these signals couldn't get through. They were on the same breaker. The Electronic transform finally failed all-together and the new one doesn't cause the problem. Just in case, though, I installed a noise block on the transformer when I replaced it. To put this in perspective, had I been using X10, the entire system would have stopped working when the transformer started generating noise, instead of just one circuit. These are easy to use, very noise immune, have a high quality look and feel. I recommend them.

Bosch GPL3T 3-Point Torpedo Laser Alignment Kit Review

(More customer reviews)I have tried many laser/leveler tools in the past, and some, like the FatMax self leveling multiline laser have not been a waste of money. OK, not the same money as the big professional lasers. But mostly a waste. So rather skeptically got this Bosch unit but only after being happy with the Bosch DAF220K electronic protractor for cove mouldings on cathedral ceilings. I had been installing a 100' aluminum and glass deck fence on a sl wavy seawall and also needing level footings on a bi-sloping deck and was frustrated with the wind and gravity messing the chalklines. My other lasers just couldn't be trusted over such a distance for flush and level and my 4 ft precision level was too long for final plumb of the 3 ft stiles.
So I bought this unit. Rarely has a tool made my life so much easier. Maybe just luck this one was so well calibrated that the bubble level on the adjustable stand got me within 3/32th inch of level at 100 ft! That little magnetically held stand is what makes this unit so useable for such a distance. Of course the dot is larger and fuzzier, but still bright enough during the day to get my mark. Thus was able to adjust the footing for the base of each stile and keep the distance to the bottom and top rails constant. Then turning the LED off, it was perfect as a torpedo level to give my plumb adjustments. Checking with my 4 ft level it was right on every time. (It also doesn't hurt that the design and workmanship are superb, the picture above doesn't do it justice, important when one loves precision tools, they just feel and look better.) Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)Ordered a few of these as emergency flashlights for the car and to take on walks at night with the dogs. We live in LA where it's not too dark, but these did not perform as well as I would have liked at night. Barely made any difference. In areas where there was practically no light at all, it was helpful, but I don't think anyone would be able to get a great deal of light out of these in order to caution away strangers or make it obvious what you're picking up on the ground. As far as being an emergency car flashlight, I guess it would work well bc of the hand crank and not having to check the batteries much, but I wouldn't find it great to work with if I were to need it for changing a tire.
The flashlights have three switches that look like buttons. The lights are arranged like a 5 on a die you might roll. The middle switch switches on the middle light, the right switches on two more, and the left switches on the other two. All together, it's barely brighter than just switching one on. There is a plug for a cable to charge your cell with, but no included cable. You can try hunting down one and I guess this could be a positive, but I'd be much happier if they would have just included this cable. I bought these bc they were the cheapest option and I didn't think I'd care much about the quality, but these tested my resolve enough.
I can't say I'd recommend these and I'm sorry for the short and poorly worded review, but I wanted to spread the word that these were pretty crummy and didn't want to spend a lot of time describing a crummy product.

(More customer reviews)The switch comes ready to wire together with existing lamp wires. Very easy. ONE NOTE HOWEVER: I purchased two switches to repair both of my lamps. One was 500W and the other 300W. The new switch went inside the 500W lamp pole with plenty of room. It would not insert into the 300W. My 300W pole inside diameter was too small and the switch height from base to toggle(?) top was too tall.
I measured both outside diameters of each of the lamps. The 500W was 1.5 inch outer diameter whereas the 300W was 1.25 inch outside diameter. Approximating, you will need a outside pole diameter of 1.35 inch or larger for this replacment switch to install.

(More customer reviews)This head lamp is incredibly bright, and it does its job very well! I could not be happier with it and I would say it's easily worth the money. I recently got a cheaper head lamp at a retail store and I was terribly disappointed in every way. It was dim, not very adjustable, and it broke after 2 or 3 uses. This lamp is quite the opposite. If I remember right, it has 3 regular brightness settings plus a "burst mode" which is insanely bright. You do have to hold down the "burst mode" button the entire time you use it though (to prevent overheating, I think), but it's so bright without it that you really shouldn't need it much.
I've used it for working on the car, mowing the lawn at night (long story), as an alternative to turning all the house lights on and off as I go downstairs in the middle of the night for water runs (yeah yeah, I know...), reading in the car at night, and a dozen other things. Despite my heavy use, I still haven't had to change the batteries yet either.
It's also worth mentioning that the filters work very well. They all diffuse the beam very nicely and evenly, and the red one is very useful for star gazing or any other activity where you need to see in the dark without destroying your night vision. Most of the time when I'm using the lamp I have the white diffusing filter on.
Over all, I couldn't be happier with this product. Actually, there is one thing that could make me happier: I'd like it if the top strap was detachable. Other than that, this product is perfect!

DEWALT DW7187 Adjustable Miter-Saw Laser System Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this based on what other owners said about it. It is fairly easy to install. The set up is a little tricky, I ended up going to the DeWalt web site to watch the set up video. I had to dig into the site quite a bit to find the video, but it was worth it. My main complaint is that the tension spring that holds the left to right setting for the laser is too weak for the application. Every couple of cuts I had to re-alighn the L-R of the laser with the adjustment screw. I contacted Dewalt and got nothing close to what I'll call help. They suggested taking it to a Dewalt service facility. I did not do that because I figured they would tell me my laser was fine. I ended up replacing the weak tensioning spring with a stronger one and now it seems to work okay.
The reason for the 3 stars is because I had to re-engineer an obvious fault with the laser and got no help from Dewalt when I asked for it. I feel that for the price I paid for this product I should have better support from the manufacturer than just a generic and automated response.

Hunter 23566 Sea Air 52-Inch 5 White Plastic Blades Ceiling Fan, White Review

(More customer reviews)I've just installed this ceiling fan on a patio with a fairly low roof and it fit well in that space. The blades are only about 9 or 10 inches down from the ceiling.
Installation wasn't too difficult but the Neoprene covering around the mounting plate did make it a little difficult to put in the screws.
The fan did not wobble even on the highest speed and it did put out a fair amount of breeze on high.
It was not as much breeze as an industrial metal fan but it is acceptable for its location.
The color depicted in the pictures on this page (as of May 15 2006) is not the color of this fan. It is more of a reddish-bronze brick color.
The blades on this fan are plastic with a wood finish instead of real wood. For me that's good because I wanted it for outside and the plastic blades should hold up well.

(More customer reviews)These tools are awesome. Forget about the power cord, and it is true that the batteries are very light especially the slim pack. The hammer/drill should be lighter. It is very heavy and clumsy but you have phantastic control over speed from very slow to top speed which quite often is very important, e.g. when extracting frozen screws. The saw is solid and has incedible cutting power. It also uses the standard saw size 6 1/2 inch. The flash light is could use a higher wattage bulb.

Really cheap quality. Included instructions don't provide enough information. Website is just as un-informative. Cheap connector wires (low current), and is not equipped with screw-on terminal junctions.
Good: Product works as advertised. Amazinlgly "regulates" the voltage to the required amount so as not to overcharge the battery. Beware though, in order to test the actual output voltage, you must apply a load on the battery end of the controller BEFORE. Failing this, the output can register volts as high as 20 volts !!! Apparently applying an actual load causes the controller to output the correct voltage range - lucky me, cause I bought 4 units ! The LEDS alternately flickers (fast for good voltage input and slow for low to no voltage on solar panel). The manual did NOT state the order of LED flashes.
(1) Fast LED flashes - good voltage/current
(2) Slow LED flashes - low/no voltage/current
(3) steady Green - fully charged
(4) steady amber - possible no load OR really low voltage/current
I recommend you go out and buy 'em. The are a really good deal and does the job at the best price ! I use them in Jamaica, to provide my appliances with power during power outages (very frequent here). Used with solar panels and DC to AC inverter, of course. Considered using a generator, but too many accidents here with generators, too noisy, too bulky, and during hurricane aftermath, fuel is a problem. Solar is freely available, so it was the BEST option all round.

The lighter-socket outlet will shut off if you exceed 5 amps of continuous draw. At 12 volts, that would be 60 watts, and as luck would have it, my laptop PC requires 90 watts (7.5 amps) when plugged directly into a 12 volt source.
Also, in terms of total amp/hours, it would not be able to power something like a CPAP machine for a full night's use, which some people might like to do on a camping trip or the like. The description touts the unit's non-automotive power uses, but they are really somewhat modest. Charging a cell phone is not much of a challenge!
It works fine for starting cars, though. This appears to be identical to the Vector VEC010S, which is the unit I have. ("BD" at the end of this product ID is obviously just for Black and Decker's labeling on the front).
My car battery went dead in mid-winter, and I thought it was shot. A neighbor had this same unit, and in the spring I borrowed it twice to start the car, which went fine, even though his unit wasn't even fully charged when I borrowed it.
Finally I bought my own, charged it overnight as per the instructions, three hours past the blinking green. When I went to jump the car, for some reason it would not start right up as it had the other times. On the first attempt, the car turned over and over, but wouldn't kick in, and the effort drew down the jump starter's cranking power to zilch. Everything stopped.
The car had not cranked long enough to become flooded, so that was not the problem. I suspected that I might not have set the clamps correctly to get a "clean" grip, and that this reduced the power available for cranking.
The instructions tell you to wait a little after long cranking, so I did. I also reset the clamps (which are perfectly strong and fine, by the way!)After a few minutes, the unit had regained some of its cranking power, and it got the car going easily.
Back inside, I plugged the starter back in to charge up, and it took several hours to get back to full (blinking green light). Apparently, getting the car going had used quite a bit of juice.
The next time I needed to jump the car, it was instantaneous, and I performed multiple jumps without needing a new charge. So, unless there is something unusual about the first usage, I suspect that my placement of the clamps was to blame. The well-written instructions are clear about the need for a good connection, after all.
If you do want it mostly for jump starts, and do not expect to need it as an "emergency power" source for long hours, or to run any kind of serious appliance, it is a fine choice.

(More customer reviews)I purchased 5 of these for Christmas presents. I tried one out in order to demonstrate at the proper time.
Number 1: This was dead in the box. So were numbers 2, 3 and 4. I didn't bother with number 5. Every flashlight was shaken more than what the measly instructions suggested. Speaking of instructions, they tell you to "make certain the light is off before attempting to charge." There is a rubber button that doesm't click or sound in anyway do there is no way of telling what the on or off position is.
Real junk, says "hummer", made in China and all five are going back.

Six years later, April 2010, the unit is still blowing away. I've been able to buy better batteries from Home Depot, and get about 17 minutes of solid blowing time even two years after I bought the better batteries. I'm now shopping for a more up-to-date unit hoping for better battery life and more volume. That said, I still really like this unit.I have a medium-size suburban house sitting on about half an acre.
In the past year I've used this to:
-clear the walks after mowing and/or trimming,
-keep the garage floor swept out (great especially in the fall) and
-clear off my deck in less than a minute.
Great complement to the cordless trimmer in this family (the batteries are interchangeable).
Big pluses: light and simple to use; enough wind for small-to-medium jobs (get a gas-powered blower if you can't use a rake for your leaves) and enough battery power for about 10-to- 15 minutes of blowing.
Minuses: Battery life a little short, especially with the basic batteries that ship with the unit. You can buy better batteries, but they're not cheap and not as easy to find. The blower is not good for year-round outdoor use in the north (they say you shouldn't charge this thing in temps below 40, and cold performance suffers significantly, IMHO).
Be CAREFUL! This is does NOT necessarily use the same battery as B&D Firestorm products. Some Firestorm batteries are the wrong size and voltage. Others have a stub which fits into the handle; the compatible B&D 18v products look like a big fat black Advil tablet (sort of).
I will probably buy most of the B&D products that are compatible, eventually. They seem to work for me.
